The state Department of Health and Human Resources reported one of the largest one day totals of new COVID-19 in recent weeks in Friday’s report.

There were 2,379 cases confirmed during the past 24 hours. Active cases have now increased to 24,532.

Calhoun hit a record high with 37 new cases reported Friday.

19 new Calhoun cases reported Thursday.

Calhoun appears to have 245 new cases during the past 14 days.

Most new Calhoun cases are among children, unconfirmed reports say a number of adult cases are in ICUs, mostly affecting the 30-50 age group.

Forty-three of the state’s 55 counties are now ‘red’ on the daily COVID alert map representing the highest rate of spread.

Hospitalizations are expected to exceed the previous peak of 818 patients when new numbers are released during Friday’s coronavirus media briefing.
