No Time For Music And Arts

(09/22/2003)

Dear Editor,

It has recently come to my attention that there is no Calhoun High School Choir! I was told there was no time slot in the schedule. Why? I'm sure I'm one among many who question block scheduling and the appropriate time allocation for the arts.

The choir and band provides music exposure for many, rather than just lessons on a few instruments for a few students. While I believe this to be great and necessary, it should be supplemental. Our county is blessed with so many talented students and teachers, both in music and choreography.

Music appreciation is something that can never be taken away. There should be a push for a change in Board of Education policy regarding music education. A modified block program would permit more classroom scheduling during the regular school hours for choir and band.

Very truly yours,

Virginia W. Buck
