More on Redmaning in 1894

Transcribed by Norma Knotts Shaffer from microfilms of the Calhoun Chronicle dated 4/10/1894, 4/24/1894 and 5/15/1894..

Word reached us a few days ago that White Caps, Redmen Regulators, Highway Robbers, Rogues or the Lord knows who, are operating on Beech Fork of the West Fork, in this county.

We understand that they said, to a man named Ben Boggs, get thee out of this country, and he went. They next called upon Louis Vogt, and informed him that he to, must take his departure and emphasized their instructions by going into his house and breaking a rifle gun and carrying away some of the pieces and Vogt said, I will arise and go also.

The good people of that vicinity, and there are many such, ought to leave no stone unturned to find the guilty parties and see to it, that they are immediately brought to justice. There can be no safety for life or property where such lawlessness is tolerated. Vogts wife and boy are already in jail on a serious charge awaiting the action of the next Grand Jury. If the people of the community above refered to, or any number of them, are seeking to rid themselves of the rest of the gang, in adopting revolutionary methods, they have made a serious mistake. We feel safe in saying, however, that none of the conservative and thinking element of the people are accessories to such conduct.

We get our information about the matter from the jailor, and he, from the friends of some of the prisoners. We sincerely hope that the report is false.

We noticed in the last Chronicle an editorial in strong language on Red maning on Beech Fork, to which we wish to say is sadly overdrawn. The citizens of Beech, with the exceptions of all communities, reputable, honest and industrious people and law abiding citizens.

Editors reply:
In reference to the "overdrawn" "Red maning" report above referred to, we need only say that we gave the source of our information and answer to other things said: "The good people of that vicinity, and there are many such, ought to leave no stone unturned to find the guilty parties and see to it, that they are immediately brought to justice."

(From another correspondent's column)
Noticing some editorials and comments by way of communications etc. on the reports of red maning in Washington district, we would say by casual remark, whilst all good citizens deplore outlawry it once in a while comes to points when petty thieves and disreputable characters defy the laws of man and ignore the commandments of God, it is then that the better class of citizens of a community are justifiable in ridding themselves of obnoxious characters even sometimes by questionable methods, which from the best understanding of circumstances that we have been able to glean, that a majority of the red maning in our district has occurred and we wouldn't be surprised if the course of a certain element, who has been defaming the morals of all decency and ignoring all paths of moral rectitude, if they don't desist in their nefarious course, they will be treated to more ministering of the red man.
