A SOLDIER'S VIEW

(12/30/2002)

Dear Editor, My name is John Nicholas, I am a SSG with the 82nd Airborne Division and am currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I was born and raised in Sunny Cal (Orma to be exact) and enjoy being able to keep up to date on people and events with your web site.

I must comment on the lack of support for possible operations against Iraq and our current presence in Afghanistan. This includes comments made by Senator Robert Byrd. Before I begin let me say that as a soldier my only goal is peace. A true soldier never wants war. To Senator Byrd and others I ask " How many chances do you give people like Saddam and Ossama?"

Saddam has ignored UN resolutions again and again for over 11yrs. (I was their the first time) The most important question I would like to ask though, Have anyone of you visited any of these places and saw or talked to the people under their control? I have! These are a great peoples who are forced into poverty and death. They need our help in ending the dictatorships that rule their lives and murder their children.

I seem to recall an America who wanted to stay at home and close their doors to some of these same actions in the late 1930's, before it became too late to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

As a global power, as a free people, and most importantly as a morally just people who believe in basic human rights for all, it is our duty to help. This means with our military as well as humanitarian aid.

Thanks, and God Bless

John Nicholas
