We're in a hell of a mess.

Corporate America's marriage to the federal government, their touting of the free market system and deregulation, has made a lot of people wealthy.

They reside in the top 5% of the American Dream.

The "trickle down" went in their pockets, actually we hear the cash went offshore.

There is plenty of blame to go around, but candidate Sen. John McCain's voice rang loud and clear a few days before the big plunge last fall, lauding the wonderfulness of the free market and calling for less regulation.

Furthermore, our politicians and corporate execs embracing the globalization of production has left this nation existing mostly on raw consumerism.

Maybe the world should not have been flattened.

If I have learned anything, it is simply how little these issues ring clear through our national media, who quite handily are used by such powerful forces.

They polarize the public with "shiny objects" to quote Dave Peyton of the Charleston Daily Mail, with issues like God, guns and gays, and the talking-head TV personalities get wealthy by ranting over contentious issues with their high ratings.

We confuse their rant for the news.

In 2002, we wrote "Most Americans are paying little attention to the unfettered, hand-offs, fast track for quick dollars, trusting the financial wizards and Washington watchdogs."

Orwell said, "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act."

He also said, "Sometimes the first duty of the intelligent is a restatement of the obvious."

This is it: We've been had!
