It their last scrimmage before opening the 2003-2004 season the Calhoun High School girls were clearly "out-athleted" but they held their own.

Did the girls win the scrimmage?

Nobody really kept score but to have held their own scrimmaging against the Calhoun High School boys reserve team - that says something because at no time during the season will they play against better physical talent.

But tonight's opener could be close since the Red Devils open by playing host to state playoff team and perennial power Braxton County.

"Christmas came a little early this year," Calhoun coach Doyle Hupp said jokingly. "But, we have to play them sometime and it may as well be now."

The Red Devils, who went 5-18 last season, are very young with only two seniors and two juniors on the squad and one of those seniors - starting guard Katie Hupp, the coach's daughter - probably will be sidelined for a few days with an ankle injury.

With Hupp injured Calhoun will probably go with a lineup of Casey Westfall at one guard position with Katie Walker or Ashley King at the other. All three are sophomores.

Amber Williams, the only senior scheduled to play tonight, will be at one forward with freshman Dani Church at the other. The center is freshman Courtney McKown.

"We're pretty young,"Hupp said in something of an understatement. "But we have some people that can actually score when they shoot the ball.

Last year we'd get 60 shots a game but only make 10.

This year they seem to be shooting better and if they shoot better we'll do all right."

Hupp also likes the ability to go to the bench for quality players. "They're young and they're not real big," he said, "but they do get after you."

Game time tonight is 7:30. The junior varsity game starts at 6 p.m.
