FRIDAY WV COVID-19 REPORT - CALHOUN IN HIGH RISK RED, 16 NEW CASES SINCE SUNDAY

Health officials in the Mountain State say 31 more West Virginians have died in connection to COVID-19, bringing the state to a total of 1,733 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Calhoun, now in red with most WV counties, reports 16 new cases since Sunday, and last week, Sunday-to-Sunday, saw an increase of 28 active cases.

Numbers increasing in neighboring counties.

Global death toll from COVID-19 tops 2 million amid the vaccine rollout, with the US leading most of the world with new cases and deaths, following a patchwork response by the US government.

The state reports 1,430 new COVID-19 cases within the past 24 hours with a current daily percent positivity rate of 5.17% and a cumulative rate of 5.46%. A total of 106,649 cases have been recorded in West Virginia since the beginning of the pandemic. 27,016 of those cases remain active and 77,900 West Virginians have recovered from the virus.

Health officials say 717 people in the Mountain State are in the hospital with COVID-19, and 195 of those patients are in the ICU. 102 patients are on ventilators.

According to the WV DHHR, 117,246 West Virginians have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 21,599 people have been fully vaccinated with the second dose. 88.4% of the 132,700 doses the state has received to allocate as first doses have already been administered.
