UPDATE: ROANE SHERIFF CONFIRMS NAME OF MAN SHOT LAST WEEK AT KETTLE, INVOLVING DEPUTY MIKE KING

10/27/2020 - Roane County Sheriff Todd Cole said Tuesday that he had contacted the State Police and been advised that he can release the name of the subject shot and killed at Kettle, Roane County on October 22 and the deputy involved in the shooting.

The dead subject has been identified as Michael Nichols, age 63, of Kettle Rd.

The officer involved in the shooting was Deputy Mike King (right) a 15 year veteran of the Roane County Sheriffs Department.

King has been involved in other officer involved shootings (See LINKS).

10/26/2020 - Roane County Sheriff Todd Cole responded to a public information request from Hur Herald Monday morning to obtain information regarding an incident last Thursday night at rural Kettle, Roane County, near the Kanawha County line.

Cole said, "The State Police is investigating this incident. As soon as I am able to release the info I will get the information you requested."

A Roane deputy was involved in a officer shooting, killing a man. Neither have been identified.

10/23/2020 - A Roane County Sheriff's Office deputy is on administrative leave while an investigation is underway by the West Virginia State Police after a fatal officer-involved shooting Thursday night.

Roane County deputies responded about 7:50 p.m. to a complaint of a man trying to start a fight with neighbors on Kettle Road off Ambler Ridge near the Kanawha County line, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The man was attempting to force entry into the caller's home, the release said.

The suspect was described to deputies as talking out of his head and was believed to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

Upon arrival, a deputy encountered the suspect on the front porch of the home. The suspect did not comply with the deputy's directions and moved toward a weapon and was then shot by the deputy, the release said.

The suspect died from his injuries.

The deputy who shot the suspect is on administrative leave while an investigation by State Police is underway.
