PM THURSDAY: WV COVID-19 GRIM DEATH TOLL HITS 12 FOR WEEK - Daily Total Thursday 96, Hospitalizations Climb

West Virginia added three more COVID-19-related deaths Thursday afternoon, bringing the grim death total this week so far to a dozen.

The state Department of Health and Human Resources confirmed in a news release the latest deaths: a 49-year-old woman from Ohio County, a 59-year-old male from Logan County and an 85-year-old woman from Logan County.

West Virginia’s death total associated with the virus is now at 115.

So far this week, the DHHR reported three deaths on Monday; five on Tuesday; one on Wednesday; and three on Thursday.

Hospitalizations also have now climbed to 102, the highest total since the state started reporting the figures May 1. There are 40 being treated in the intensive care unit and 19 on a ventilator.

Meanwhile, the DHHR said the state had a total of 96 new coronavirus cases for the day, adding 48 more Thursday afternoon. The state now has a total of 6,422 total cases.

The number of active cases declined 18 from the morning report and was listed at 1,604. Recoveries increased 63 from the morning report and were listed at 4,703.

More than 277,000 tests have been conducted, and the overall positive test rate remained at 2.32%. The daily positive test rate was at 2.60%.

Mingo County has reported 100 cases for July, with continued outbreaks in nursing facilities, church groups and within the ranks of responders.
