Dear Parents,
A new school year is about to begin in Calhoun County, and we are excited to have your child in our schools. During the summer, many preparations were made to prepare for the upcoming school year so that Calhoun County can provide a quality education for your child. I know that our staff members are anticipating a productive school year and look forward to working with you to help your child reach their highest potential. Calhoun County is fortunate to have four excellent schools. Teachers in these schools have been involved in training during the summer to strengthen their teaching skills and our principals have been busy planning for ways to make our schools even better.
Calhoun County Schools provide many services and programs that are essential to supporting children. At a time when the economy of our county is struggling, the services provided through the school system become increasingly important to the success of many of our children. As I was reflecting on the range of services that are provided to children, I thought you might be interested in some of the information regarding programs and services provided last year.
Calhoun County Schools served over 285,000 meals to students from preschool to high school. These meals include breakfast, lunch and supper, and an after school snack if students stay for after school activities. All students were provided meals at no cost to their parents. Our school buses traveled over 293,000 miles transporting children to school and school-related events. Calhoun Middle/High School has been a totally remodeled restrooms in the academic wing, and new sewage plant at the cost of just over 1 million dollars.
After school tutoring services are provided to enhance the educational success of our students. This year after-school programs ASPIRE will be offered at AES, PHE, and Calhoun Middle/High School. If you are interested in your child participating in the after school activities, please contact your school for an after school application. Calhoun County provided a high-quality summer school program for our children's continued academic growth. This included activities for all grades, and the high school students had camp experiences that included music, cooking, and outdoor activities.
Calhoun County Schools provide a full array of special education services to exceptional students in our county. High-quality college dual credit and Advanced Placement courses are readily available to students in high school. Calhoun County has partnered with Glenville State College to offer students an opportunity to earn an associate degree in education or criminal justice while in high school. This means that a student could receive two diplomas at their high school graduation, a high school diploma, and an associate degree. This allows students an early college experience.
Finally, Calhoun County Schools has received a Community In Schools grant to expand our student and family services. We have employed a social worker and a community facilitator that will help families get needed services.
