WV LEADS THE NATION IN DRUG OVERDOSE DEATHS - Meth Remains Primary Problem In Rural Area

(04/18/2018)
West Virginia is leading the nation with the number of drug overdose deaths per capita.

909 individuals reported dying from drug overdose in 2017, with a record 887 in 2016.

The actual number of deaths related to the disease of addiction are much higher.

While last year's drug death increase was fueled by fentanyl-caused overdose, there was a rise in non-opioid drug deaths from methamphetamine, amphetamine and cocaine.

In West Virginia's rural counties like Calhoun, meth addiction remains as a primary problem.
