Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center is attempting to procure an electrical
generator that will keep the facility going during power outages.
CEO Barb Lay said two generators placed in operation in 1959 when the
hospital opened are reaching their life expectancy.
The Calhoun Commission is supporting a grant application to obtain a new
electrical generating system.
The old natural gas powered generators are no longer manufactured and
parts are difficult to obtain. The generators no longer meet standards.
Lay said the rural health care facility, which serves several counties, has
the only negative pressure isolation room in the region. She said
maintaining power is essential not only for continuity of service, but
during times of emergency.
A new generator will cost about $170,000, and a grant application is being
submitted through the state Office of Emergency Services.
