AUTHORITIES SAY SMITH DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES - Case Had Been Treated As "Suspicious Death"

(11/25/2003)
Authorities have ruled that twenty-seven-year old Ronald "Ron" William Smith Jr. died of natural causes.

Sgt. Darrin Campbell of the Grantsville Detachment of the West Virginia State Police said the man's death was originally treated as a "suspicious death," mostly because of his sudden death and his age.

Smith died November 21 just outside a basement apartment at Five Forks, north of Grantsville on State Route 16.

"No evidence of foul play was found," said Sgt. Campbell. "The autopsy showed no injuries that would have led to his death."

The body was sent to the State Medical Examiners Office. Trooper Jeff Hunt was in charge of the investigation.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for the residence where Smith was visiting and questioned several individuals regarding his sudden death.

Smith, whose address was Parkersburg, was a former Calhoun resident and a graduate of Calhoun High School.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday in Parkersburg.
