Rev. Ray Harris, retired Assistant Calhoun Superintendent for Calhoun
Schools, died in
Roane General Hospital on March 30. Harris, 76, of Spencer had a
career in education
that spanned 40 years as a teacher, counselor and administrator.
He was graduate of Calhoun County High School, Glenville State College
and obtained
a Masters Degree from West Virginia University. He was a veteran of
World War II.
He served as a minister in Lewis, Boone, Gilmer, Braxton, Roane and
Calhoun
Counties. He was a member of the National Education Association, West
Virginia
Education Association and the Calhoun County Teacher's Association.
He was active in the AARP, Cancer Coalition, Miletree Auxiliary, VFW
and was an
active member of the Democratic Party.
Harris was the son of the late Rev. C. D. and Glada Ritchie Harris.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Carpenter Harris and a
son, Douglas
Harris of Spencer. Also a brother, William D. Harris of Grantsville;
two sisters, Oleta
Heiney of Ravenna, Ohio and Juanita Waggoner of Deerfield, Ohio, in
addition to many
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Leota Leggett of Carter,
Kentucky.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Stump Funeral
Home in
Arnoldsburg. Rev. John Powell will officiate with interment in the
Collins Cemetery at
Stumptown with military graveside rites. Friends will be received from
6 to 9 p.m.
Tuesday until the hour of service.
