The interior of Arnoldsburg Elementary School was severely damaged by this
week's flood, calling for a major clean-up effort which started yesterday
morning.
Superintendent Ron Blankenship said this was the third time flood water had
entered the school since it was built.
At least nine inches of muddy water covered virtually all the rooms in the school,
damaging wooden shelves, some fixtures and the contents. Blankenship said it
remains to be seen if the tile is damaged.
School personnel used plywood and sandbags to try and minimize the damage.
Water from the West Fork surrounded the building, and was at least one and
one-half feet high on the outside walls.
"The sealing effort paid off some," said Blankenship.
School personnel turned out in large numbers yesterday to begin the clean-up,
using water hoses, squeegees, brooms, vacuums, mops and rags.
"The last time this happened, we had the National Guard available," said
Blankenship. "This is a really big job which will take several days," he said. The
administrator said school will be closed for a third day, but "fortunately next week
it is Thanksgiving vacation, which will give us some time to make the place
safe."
Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center arrived at the school to give tetanus shots to school workers.
Blankenship said the building was covered by flood insurance and initial contacts
have been made through the Office of Emergency Services to see what assistance
might be available to put the school back in order.
Regular service workers were joined by teachers and other personnel in the
clean-up effort.
