About 200 more West Virginia National Guard troops have been called to active duty for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
National Guard spokesman Major Mike Cadle says about 175 soldiers from the 36-64th Maintenance Company from Point Pleasant and Eleanor will enter active service around December 1.
The Army Reserve has also placed the 305th Military Police Company out of Wheeling and Big Bend, Calhoun County on alert. That means the troops could be subject to a call-up, but have not been officially activated.
After mobilization, the National Guard unit will report to Camp Atterbury, Indiana, on December 10.
Several soldiers from the National Guard early entry program are being individually attached to the recent call-ups, including Pfc. Kenneth V. Starcher of Calhoun.
Cadle says ten members of the Charleston-based Detachment 1, 196th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment are being activated on January 2nd. These soldiers will travel to a mobilization station at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, January Fifth.
The final destinations of both units is unknown, but will likely be Iraq. The soldiers have been advised they will be gone for up to 18 months.
West Virginia has more than 2,300 National Guard members on duty supporting the war, in addition to Army reservists.
