NICHOLAS BRANDISHED WEAPON AFTER FALL - Authorities Are Investigating

(11/03/2003)
A Bear Run man reportedly pulled a weapon on Calhoun Emergency Services personnel early Sunday morning, after they responded to his hillside camper in a rural area on Bear Run off Nicut Road.

Darrell Nicholas, about 60, allegedly brandished a pistol after he received injuries to his face in a fall.

Nicholas reportedly surrendered the weapon to a friend identified as David Summers, prior to the arrival of the State Policeman Doug Starcher. Summers said the weapon was not loaded.

At least five other law enforcement officers were enroute to the scene, including two State Policemen and three members of the Calhoun County Sheriffs Department, when the incident calmed down.

Two EMS crews responded to the 8:08 a.m. call, one from the Minnora station and another with a 4-wheel drive from Mt. Zion.

Nicholas was taken to Roane General Hospital in Spencer, where he was treated and released.

State Police are continuing the investigation.
