Calhoun County young writers were honored on March 30 at the
annual West Virginia Young Writers Workshop at the University of
Charleston. In addition to recognizing each of them and their
award-winning selections, state winners will be announced, writing
workshops will be led by authors and a keynote speaker will address
the group.
The following students will be honored. Their selections were
judged to be outstanding in a county competition. "The Shadow," by
Erika Harold (Grades 11-12), "A Goodbye," by Laura Pfeffer (Grades
9-10), "Blacklisted," by Tiffani Tanner (Grades 7-8), "The Fishing
Trip," by Seth Jarvis (Grades 5-6), "My Christmas," by Tim Sutro
(Grades 3-4), and "My Pet Tiny," by Michael Tucker (Grades 1-2).
Other students will be recognized for the high quality of
their selections at a county awards ceremony on May 31 at the
middle-high school auditorium. Grades 11-12: "Solitude," by Scottie
Westfall and "Stranger on the Road," by Darris Hupp. Grades 9-10: "The
Bait," by Steven Griffin and "The Move," by Jake Krack. Grades 7-8:
"Hunter," by Ashli Cottrell and "Disaster," by Chad Conley. Grades
5-6: "Shapes," by Amie Carilli and "Who's Laughing Now?" by Christina
LoVine. Grades 3-4: an untitled story about a fire-breathing dragon by
Ben Sims and "My Dog Rowdy," by Tessa Batten. Grades 1-2: "Petey My
Pet," by Erik Johnson, and "Going to the Beach," by Alisha Warner.
