Governor Bob Wise has announced the names of 165 high school
juniors chosen to participate in the 2001 Governor's Honors Academy
July 8 - 29 at West Virginia University.
Shaina Cain and Darris Hupp, members of the Calhoun High School Class
of 2002, will represent Calhoun County. Shaina is the daughter of Dan
and Barbara Cain of Big Bend. Darris is the son of Russell and Regina
Hupp of Creston.
"West Virginia's most talented students deserve the
opportunity to sharpen their minds by working together," Wise said.
"The Governor's Honors Academy gives them that chance. It's a labor of
love for the people who work all year to make it a success and an
honor that each of these 165 students has earned through hard work and
study.
Educators, business people and state government has worked
together since 1984 on the Honors Academy. Its mission is to challenge
students to grow intellectually and creatively in a culturally diverse
atmosphere.
Since its inception, nearly 3,000 of West Virginia's rising
seniors meeting the highest standards of academic excellence have
attended. Students take two courses: the first focuses intensively on
the individual student's greatest academic strengths while the second
expands knowledge in other areas.
The Academy is managed by the West Virginia Department of
Education, the state coordinator of Governor's Schools and the
Governor's Schools Advisory Council. It is supported by Gov. Wise, the
Legislature, the Department of Education, institutions of higher
education, private business/industry and individual county school
districts.
