Grantsville's town council approved a second reading Monday of an ordinance
which clarifies how the town will provide public information, which included other
items regarding conducting town business. The third reading, unless there are
changes, will make the ordinance official.
Several town residents came to discuss a second reading of an ordinance which
defines penalties for various violations.
The ordinance proposed fines of $500 for the first offense, $1,000 for the second
offense and $2,500 for a third offense, which would be enforced by an established
municipal court.
About 25 people attended the meeting, with several speaking out against the
amount of the fines, including former mayor Gary Knight.
Opponents of the fines said they felt they were too steep for people on fixed
incomes, the elderly and the poor.
The council amended the ordinance, drastically reducing the fines to $100, $200
and $300. A third reading on the ordinance will be conducted at the next council
meeting.
