Most West Virginians will be paying more to heat their homes and businesses with natural gas this winter.
Citing problems caused by a national gas storage, the state Public Service Commission today released a list of decisions affecting 16 companies that supply service to nearly 34,000 customers.
Thirteen of the companies have been given permission to increase rates. Customers of Consumer Gas Utility Company will see the biggest hike at 47 percent. The company had requested a 74 percent increase.
PSC Utility Division Director Dave Ellis blames the increases on rising natural gas prices.
The agency recommends consumers take steps to save money this winter. Those suggestions include turning down the thermostat, weatherizing their homes and looking into utility-sponsored programs to spread out payments.
