"Riverboatin' 0n the Little Kanawha," a traveling exhibit about riverboat traffic in this area, will continue through November 6 at the Calhoun County Library.
The exhibit consists of over 100 vintage photos of the old riverboats, models, and artifacts from early Twentieth Century river life, plus a power point show of vintage photos juxtaposed with current views of the river.
Historian, Joy Stalnaker, has written about the history of the Little Kanawha Valley from the earliest settlers through the Civil War to the end of the riverboat era when the roads were paved. Dr. Emory Kemp, of WVU, has written of the archaeological explorations involving the locks and other remains of early river transportation, with drawings and photographs that document the history of technology on the river.
Calhoun County was the center of riverboat construction beginning in the late 1800's, and many Calhoun Countians worked on riverboats or used them for transportation.
Much of the building material for the construction of the old Calhoun County High School was brought to Grantsville on boats and barges.
The exhibit will be on display through November 6. Hours of operation are from noon to 4:00 pm on weekdays and from 2:00 to 5:00 on weekends. The exhibit is free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend.
