The food drive held at the Calhoun Homecoming football game was a great
success with 285 cans of food collected. The donation will go a long
way in helping Calhoun people in need.
The Food Pantry is located in the First Baptist Church of Grantsville. Currently it
gives out food to over 150 people a month, sometimes climbing close to 200.
Because of the number of people needing help this food drive came at a good time
and the response was
overwhelming.
The Food Pantry is not used to spread "religious propaganda" or to increase
membership at any church. It is simply a faith-
based, non-denominational ministry helping those in need.
The pantry receives donations on a regular basis
from several Baptist churches, as well as the Methodist and Catholic churches.
"It is simply a community-wide effort to reach out a compassionate hand," said a
pantry spokesperson.
"A large thank you should be given to Bev Morford and Anita Parsons for organizing this last drive.
They are truly an inspiration. Calhoun High Principal Mike Offutt should also be commended
for putting the needs of the hungry above all else and waiving the admission price
to the game," they said.
"A special thanks should be given to Pete Trippett. Pete oversees the food pantry
and insures it stays stocked. He drives to Spencer
practically every month and returns with a truck load of food. He travels to several
of the area churches to pick up what they have gathered when
they are unable to deliver it themselves."
Trippett has made himself available to the public on an everyday basis. It is not
unusual for
him to go to the food pantry two or three times a day, about every day of the
year.
If you have any questions about the Grantsville Food Pantry you should contact
Pete Trippett at 354-7966 or Rev. Jim Skedel at the First
Baptist Church.
