CALHOUN HIGH STUDENTS ORGANIZING PROTEST - Time Of Homecoming Parade An Issue

(10/02/2003)
Calhoun High School students are reportedly planning a demonstration Friday, protesting the school's decision to have a homecoming parade at 5 p.m. on October 10.

The Student Council apparently voted to protest the administration's decision. They contend the 5 p.m. hour would exclude the participation of most students.

Protest organizers say they want to have the parade during school hours, so everyone can attend.

"Homecoming is about bringing the current students together with the past students, developing a sense of unity, and supporting the schools football team," wrote Kelly Badgett, one of the protesters.

"We are trying to renew the spirit, fun, and traditions of our parents and those who have graduated before us," she said.

Students who have signed a petition maintain there is enough allowable time from scheduling to have the event during the school day.

Otherwise, they contend some students will be on a bus riding home, or will have found it difficult to get back to the event at 5 p.m.

The protest has been scheduled during lunch Friday.
