Driving around Calhoun last night it was noticeable the deer herd has started
moving around, with rutting season on the horizon.
Risk of hitting a deer along rural highways will increase through the end of the
year.
Insurance claims have soared to $44 million annually for deer collisions in WV.
About 30,000 claims were made by policy holders to the state's largest companies
last year.
Auto insurance costs are skyrocketing in the state, with most carriers contending
they lose money. Some of the carriers like State Farm have quit issuing policies to
new customers.
Some companies blame the deer problem, others say claims have escalated
because of lawsuits. Some insurance company watchers charge some companies
have made bad investments, with policyholders being required to make up the
losses.
West Virginia Insurance Commissioner Jane Cline is urging motorists to stay alert
for deer.
The season of risk has started.
