CALHOUN STUDENTS SCORE WELL ON STATE-WIDE TEST - WV Writing Assessments

(09/26/2003)
Calhoun Schools have scored well in West Virginia Writing Assessment Scores, according to Gregory H. Cartwright, Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

The West Virginia Department of Education annually conducts the West Virginia Writing Assessment for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 across the state.

Calhoun County just received the scores for students who took the assessment last spring.

The Writing Assessment is scored by West Virginia teachers during the summer. The scoring process results in scores of 1 to 4 with four being considered an exemplary score.

The West Virginia Accreditation Standards require that at least 60% of the students at each grade level at each school must score 2.0 or higher.

"Calhoun County Schools is quite proud of the fantastic results shown by our students last spring," said Cartwright.

The number of students who scored a 2.0 or above.

Group Percentage of students receiving 2.0 or above

4th grade at Arnoldsburg Elementary School 91.3%

4th grade at Pleasant Hill School 88.6%

All Calhoun County 4th graders 89.6%

All Calhoun County 7th graders 90.7%

All Calhoun County 10th graders 91.6%

Two fourth graders from Pleasant Hill School and one tenth grader from Calhoun Middle High School received the exemplary score of 4.0. "This score indicates that two trained readers each scored this paper as exemplary. The names of those individuals have not been provided to the school system yet although they should arrive within the next few days," said Cartwright. "Congratulations to Calhoun County students and teachers for a job very well done."
