SYCAMORE LOW-WATER BRIDGE STRUCK BY FLOODING - De'Lorenzo Says It Is Unsafe

Bridge has to be dangerous for school buses, says Sycamore resident

Ed De'Lorenzo circulating petition for new bridge

Ed De'Lorenzo says he is really concerned about a low-water bridge washing out. It is near the mouth of Sycamore Creek on County Route 7/3. Tuesday's flash flooding sent high waters down the right and left forks of Sycamore, said De'Lorenzo, causing the problem.

The bridge is located a short distance from Russett, Route 7.

"The concrete-base with asphalt on top took a big hit," he said, washing part of the structure away and creating large holes. "I don't think the school bus is taking any chances by crossing it."

He said it is not only unsafe, but will soon be impassable.

De'Lorenzo is circulating a petition in the community to try and get a real bridge. "It has been a real problem for a long time for those who live up Sycamore," he said.

The low-water bridges are often called "submarines" in Calhoun, mostly because rising water washes over top the structures, submerging them.

"They really aren't bridges," said De'Lorenzo. "I don't think they build them anymore.

"It is slipping away, piece by piece."

The petition will be sent to the WVDOH in Parkersburg and the governor's office.
