NATIONAL HEALTH CARE GROUP VISITING CALHOUN - Health Problems In Rural America

(08/27/2003)
The National Advisory Committee on Rural Health (NACRH) will visit Calhoun County on September 8th.

The 21-member citizens' panel of nationally recognized experts provides recommendations to the Secretary of Health and Human Services on ways to address health care problems in rural America.

Senior Services Subcommittee members will lunch at the Calhoun County Committee on Aging (CCCOA) at 12:30 p.m. Senior Services Subcommittee members will rejoin members of the Oral Health and Mental Health Subcommittees at 2:30 p.m. for a site visit at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

The site visit at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center will include tours of Minnie's Rainbow Day Care Center, the Long-Term Care Unit, and Calhoun Dental Medical Clinic.

It will culminate in the Education Annex with presentations by Minnie Hamilton employees on topics of interest to the Subcommittee members, a brief Q&A session, and refreshments.

Chartered in 1987, the NACRH is a committee that represents expertise in the delivery, financing, research, development, and administration of health and human services in rural areas. Included are representatives of state government, provider associations, and other rural interest groups.

The Committee meets three times a year. The first meeting in Washington, DC coincides with the opening of the Congressional session and serves as a starting point for setting the Committee's agenda for the coming year. Thereafter, the Committee meets twice in the field during June and September to do ongoing work on the yearly topic, with some time devoted to site visits and presentations by the host community.

The Committee's work plan for 2003/2004 includes subcommittees that will examine the integration of behavioral health and primary care in rural settings, access to oral health care services, and issues affecting the rural elderly.
