The Economic Development Grant Committee selected 50 projects in 27 counties
yesterday to receive a total of $225 million dollar in state assistance.
The committee dropped both racetrack proposals, one at Flatwoods and the other
in Kanawha County, after what was described as an angry debate.
Committee members could not agree which of the two $13 million dollar proposals
was worth funding. After more than 90 minutes of debate, they voted to remove
both from the process.
The committee cut 12 of 62 final applicants entirely and reduced the requests of 25
others, causing deep disappointment among those rejected.
To be funded by the sale of bonds paid off by $19 million dollars in annual video
lottery revenue, the grants are designed to fund projects that create or retain jobs,
can attract other funding and serve the public interest.
