The open house for the Creston Community Building is scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, August 10. Many former scholars and residents are planning to be on hand. All are invited to come spend the day, see the work that has been done, relive old times, visit old friends and acquaintances, etc. Folks are urged to bring old pictures and other items of interest. Refreshments will be provided.

Several local residents have been working getting ready for the Wirt County Fair which starts on Wednesday, August 6 and runs through Saturday August 9. Some have livestock, others have projects & exhibits, some are workers and others just go to visit, look at the animals and have a good time.

Congratulations to Ashlee Small the 2003 Wirt County Fair Queen. Wirt County is fortunate to have such wonderful young people.

Charles Russell was called for jury duty.

Orrison and Jimmy Schrader were among those calling on C. Glen Arthur.

Mr. & Mrs. Billy Butler were in Creston looking after their garden.

Chuck & Sally Haavik and daughters were visiting in Creston & Elizabeth and looking after their oil interests on Ann's Run. They also visited family in Athens, Ohio.

It was reported that "Younger Sis" a/k/a Sunshine fell asleep out on the Mt. Zion Ridge and was surprised by none other than Mr. Grady.

Ronnie Wyers, Rod Lynch, Sgt. Jas. A. Blankenship, USA, Retired, H. D. Dooley and Stephen White were attending to business in Elizabeth.

Madaline Lynch, age 84, passed away after a protracted illness. A native of Little Creek she was a daughter of the late Curtis and Mabel Schrader Stutler.

Carl Ferrell was consulting a bone specialist. He is scheduled for a MRI exam on his elbow that was hurt in a workplace injury.

Anna Engelke and Keith Collins spent the week-end visiting the Michie Tavern, Monticello and some of the vineyards in the surrounding area. They were thinking about checking on Sneaky Pie Brown's hometown of Crozet, VA.

Roger Godfrey moved back to Creston.

"The Preacherman" tore down the old "Goldsmith" house. "The Preacherman" lives in Don Rhodes' rental trailer.

The Green Hornet reported that he loaned a set of "real" handcuffs to the Sassy Storekeeper. Earlier it had been reported that Stephen, Jacob and Neil had asked her comely daughter out. Some brag so details are sketchy. Kyle might give the straight story but he went off to summer camp.

The interior of the Burning Springs M. E. church is scheduled for a new paint job.

Retired Creston postmistress Sue Farnsworth and family were visiting relatives in Kentucky recently.

Jane Engelke has been busy putting stain and finish on some chairs and an old telephone stand that Bessie Arthur stripped for her in preparation of her moving her store, Elizabeth Michaels into new quarters on Camden Avenue. She will be located at the Camden Plaza near Papa John's Pizza. Opening is scheduled for August 15th with hours from 11AM to 6PM Tuesday thru Saturday. Other times by appointment. Jane is inviting everyone to stop by and say "Hello"….even if you aren't in the market for a prom or pageant dress! Jane is expanding her selections to include women's wear for special occasions.

On Friday, August 8, 2003 there will be a sale of special flag stamps at the Creston Post Office in recognition of the special flag that was donated to the Creston Community Building by Sen. John D. Rockefeller, IV. The flag had previously been flown over the nation's capitol in Washington, D. C. All who have an interest in either philately or in the local area are urged to stop by or make arrangements to pick up some of the special stamps. These stamps are only available at post offices that have a special event that relates to flags. The special covers and cancellations on the occasion of Wirt County heroine Jessica Lynch's return home were exceedingly popular at the Palestine post office.

Margie Hall of Burning Springs will be 91 on Friday.

The price of local Penn grade crude oil rose $1.75 to $29/bbl. Apparently Hastings Station is still undergoing repairs as Dominion indicated they are still shipping gas over onto the Equitable system. All this means that the 'bite' for transport is 38%.

PDK the out of state guard rail contractor finished up the job on W. Va. 5 at Creston.

There was a heavy downpour Sunday in Creston which, among other things, drove home the point that at least one roof needs attention. First cutting hay remains uncut while lawns continue to grow, frogs have been having a great time and several Dobson flies (the adult of the hellgrammite) have been observed.

Nancy and Jane Engelke and Susan Myers attended the Parkersburg Homecoming Pageant on Saturday evening. Congratulations to Melissa Hartshorn and Tiffany Jones of Calhoun County. Both girls placed in the top 5 with Melissa taking 4th place and Tiffany 5th. You can look for these girls to be winners in future pageants. They did a terrific job!!! This years Parkersburg Homecoming pageant winner was Cori Chidister. As a special treat, Cindy Sims Griffith of Calhoun County was the featured singer. Cindy is just as beautiful as ever.

Jane Engelke judged the Jackson County Jr. Fair Pageant last Monday evening. Nancy Engelke and Susan Myers attended the fair that evening as well. Susan was an overnight guest at the Engelke residence.
