The regular business meeting of the Creston Community Building will be held Tuesday, August 5 at 7 P. M. at the Creston Community Building. All interested workers should be on hand. Among other things final plans for the Creston open house, scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday August 10 will be worked out. Tuesday before the meeting, at 5 P.M., those on hand will begin washing the windows so they are nice and clean for the open house. After the meeting and the next evening, Wednesday, August 6th at 5 P.M., those who can will paint the benches in the little room. If you haven't been to the building for a while you will be amazed. Betty Bish has set up a little classroom in the back of the little room in honor of all students and teachers. Betty is looking for pictures of students and teachers of the Creston Grade School.
There were 108 riders for the summer Creston ATV poker run which went through places like Triplett, the Village of Richardsonville, Goose Nest, Mulberry, Buck Run, Beaver Dam, Coal Run, and Rock Camp. One comely lass who has several Creston area relatives said, "I've never been hung up!" Well, rest assured, she can never say that again. Another fellow missed the 'path' in the West Fork ford and had to be rescued. Folks came from far and near and all reported having a good time. Duane Carper won the 50/50 while Kim Echard placed first, Stacie Willis second and Doyle Allen third. DOH employees from Wood and Roane County took the trip as did the High Sheriff and his daughter. There were electric men, oil men, gas men, factory hands, retirees, comely damsels and many others. The only technical difficulty was a brand new, top of the line ATV that wanted to run too fast. The Creston Community would like to thank all who participated and helped with the even.
Eddie Norman was checking out the poker run route and when he was on Coal Run, over on Spring Creek he looked "confused". Two ample, actually very ample, ladies came along and offered to "help him". They said they were looking to find the road to Elizabeth but they did inform Eddie that he was in the right place. No doubt other details can be obtained.
S. R. Lynch was presented a plaque naming him as a lifetime honorary trustee for the Creston Community Building. President Eddie Norman and Vice President Betty Bish made the presentation.
Nancy Hall is home after being a patient in the City Hospital.
Rev. Juanita Lockhart filled her regular appointment at the Burning Springs M. E. church.
Alice Cunningham has a case of streptococcus throat.
Donald Basnett, age 79, of Ravenswood passed away. He was a native of Annamoriah.
Eulia Rader, age 88, of Grantsville passed away. She was the mother of Ernest "Tom" Rader of Annamoriah. She was a patient in the Minnie Hamilton long term care unit.
Helen Nutter's sister, Shirley Kelley, age 65 of Mineral Wells passed away. Burial was in the Wolverton Cemetery.
Nancy and Jane Engelke, Kim Villers, Linda Vlach, and Richard Lowe, attended the Oil & Gas Pageant in Sistersville Saturday evening. It was also well attended by several Calhoun County folks, as two local Calhoun girls were in the pageant. Melissa Hartshorn and Tiffany Jones did an excellent job and Melissa came away with the 1st Runner up title. Pageants teach young women many skills including poise, ability to communicate, and hard work. Melissa won scholarship money for college and that is one of the biggest benefits in the pageant world. Millions of dollars are given away every year to women seeking money for a college education. More than half of Jane Engelke's college tuition was paid by scholarship money won in pageants. An added benefit is the life long friendships formed by the contestants as they move from pageant to pageant, hoping to win and earn a trip to Charleston, W. Va. in January to compete in the State Fairs and Festival pageant. Wirt County this year will have three girls competing for the title of West Virginia Association of Fairs and Festivals Queen. They are: Melissa Offutt as the West Virginia Beef Queen, Jennifer Baileys as the Ripley 4th of July Queen and the lucky young lady who will win this years title of Miss Wirt County Fair Queen 2003. Hope you all come to the Wirt County Fair Pageant on Friday, August 1st at 7 PM at the Wirt County High School Auditorium. The queen will be announced on Friday evening but will be officially crowned at 7:30 PM at the Fair Grounds on Wednesday, August 6th.
Area residents participated in the preparation for and attended the homecoming for Wirt County heroine, PFC Jessica Lynch. It was reported down at the Mouth of Elk River that it was the largest media event in state history. Details of the bumbling are duly reported elsewhere but all went well with the U. S. Army's most famous soldier giving an excellent speech. Cap'n Spock obtained press credentials and attended with press representatives of Fox, the alphabet networks, major newspapers, world reporters, etc. The days of having to apologize for being from rural West Virginia should now be over forever. Of course part of the original "stigma" was a media event generated to show that a catholic could get elected in 'a backwoods area inhabited by ignorant hillbillies' but all that is another story.
Nathan Miller of Elizabeth returned home on leave after a scenic sojourn among the sand dunes, etc. along the Euphrates. Folks down at the county seat held a special celebration for him.
Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Westfall and family were calling on C. Glen Arthur.
Ted Grim of Erie Pennsylvania came in to help with the ATV run. He also visited area family and friends.
The price of local Pennsylvania grade crude oil is $27/bbl.
While some folks have gotten upset about comments made about the Supremes and their recent decisions it ought to be noted that Justice Stephen Breyer said U. S. laws should be made to "harmonize" with those in old Europe.
Closer to home the State Supremes, down at the mouth of Elk River, are getting quite a bit of scrutiny, some not so kind, for their part in the Workmen's Compensation fiasco.
