ARTIST JOHNSON'S "A HERO'S HOMECOMING" - A Message From Charlotte Godfrey

(07/24/2003)
Last Sunday was a special day at Victory Baptist Church, honoring America's veterans. (See Hur Herald story)

Calhoun resident artist (and member of Victory Baptist) Shari Johnson painted a picture for "Patriotic Sunday" in honor of veterans. The painting was presented to Col. Larry Godfrey, a Grantsville native, who returned to the event.

The painting is entitled "A Hero's Homecoming."

Painting by Shari Johnson

She described the painting: "An airplane carries a weary soldier who has served their county well, and will soon touch down on the American soil they have been defending. I chose the fall of the year for the colors and the obvious season that it depicts."

Ecclesiates says "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven."

"Although I know in my heart there is a reason for war, it makes it no less heartbreaking for the family at home."

"The church steeple in the distance stands for the many saints in the background of war who pray for the safe homecoming of our men and women. The three white crosses under the tree in the field are for the fallen comrades who didn't make it home."

"The smoke rising up from the chimney is for the family that keeps the home fires burning, long awaiting their loved one's return. The American flag waves proudly at the entrance of the home where they are proud to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave."

The table is set on the lawn for the celebration dinner, and the welcome home flag flies in front of the evergreen tree. The evergreen tree signifies there will be a homecoming one day that will be everlasting, made possible by the death and resurrection of Christ, which is symbolized by the seven Resurrection lilies. The perfect number for the perfect plan."

A LETTER OF APPRECIATION

I really enjoyed reading about the honoring of Colonel Godfrey last Sunday, I am sure he was just overwhelmed at the outpouring of support from his home town and all its residents and that it meant a lot to him. His mother called to tell me all about it and how proud she was and gave me this web site.

I would like to personally thank Dick Jarvis, Neil Blankenship and to all the others who made this day special for Larry, and also to all the residents of Grantsville and Calhoun County. I have fond memories of living there with Larry many years ago.

On a personal note, I'd like to add that Larry has four children and four grandchildren (with another on the way) who have supported him over the years, and that love him very much. They are as proud of him as I am...we're very sorry that we missed this great event.

Sincerely,

Charlotte Godfrey, Wife of Larry Godfrey
