Mr. George A. Johnson, 73, of Grantsville, West Virginia, died Monday, July 21st, at his
residence.
George was born September, 18, 19 29, in Grantsville, a son of the late Glenn and Thelma
Johnson. he was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in New Martinsville, WV.
A graduate of Calhoun County High School in 1948, he received an AB degree in education
from Glenville State College in 1958 and a masters degree from West Virginia University in
1962.
He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954 as a Staff Sergeant and a paratrooper
in the 101st Airborne Division based in fort Campbell, Kentucky. He then became a member of
the American Legion Post 120 in Hundred, WV.
After teaching and coaching in Hundred, WV for nine years, he joined the administrative staff of
the Wetzel County Board of Education, holding various positions including Transportation
Director, Treasurer, Personnel Director and Assistant Superintendent. He later retired as the
Superintendent of Wetzel County Schools in 1986, after eight years in that post.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edythe, two daughters, Keren Longwell and her
husband, Sam of Hundred, and Terra Mauro and her husband, Eugene of Peters Township,
PA; one sister, Virginia of Los Angelas, CA; five grandchildren, Thad Longwell and his fiancee,
Kim Campbell, Dana Joel Longwell and his wife, Amanda, Alana Longwell, Nathan Mauro and
Sean-Paul Mauro; two great grandchildren, Cara and Camden Longwell; one nephew, Kevin
Riddel; two nieces, Valarie and Vanessa Riddel; mother-in-law, Ina Hannah; two
brothers-in-law, Argle Hannah and his wife, Elsie and Robert Hannah.
Funeral Mass will be Thursday, July 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville,
Celebrated by Rev. Leo B. Lydon of Clarksburg, WV. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 23 from
5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Grantsville, immediately
following mass.
