A Kanawha County schools maintenance employee was taken into custody after opening fire during the county's school
board meeting Thursday night.
Rusty Bright, 58, of Rand came into the meeting after it began. Reports said he was carrying three buckets of gasoline and a
black garbage bag.
Eyewitnesses say Bright dumped the gasoline on county Maintenance Director Jeff Allred, and then attempted to set a table
on fire. The administrator fled the room.
Bright reportedly took out a shotgun from the bag and began firing. A Capital High School employee Karen Taylor, who
was in the back of the room, suffered a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital. Her injuries aren't believed to be life
threatening.
Three men inside the boardroom tackled Bright and held him down until police arrived.
Bright was arraigned in magistrate court on one count of malicious wounding and one count of wanton endangerment. Bail
was set at $250,000. Bright did apologize to the shooting victim during his arraignment.
There's no word on why Bright was so upset with Maintenance Director Allred.
