Powerful storms swept across the region last evening, doing severe damage
in Wood and Jackson county and other areas of the state. The immediate area was
spared damage, although power lines went down just east of Grantsville on Route
5.
One storm after another has crossed the area during the past several days.
American Electric Power reports 28,000 residents were without power last night,
mostly in Cabell, Lincoln, Wayne and Kanawha counties.
Heavy rain put small streams out of their banks, covering highways in Wirt County. A
report on damage in the county was not available.
High winds led to the collapse of a house in Parkersburg on Avery Street. A family of three, including a baby, were inside. A
resident from a nearby apartment complex pulled the family from the debris. The infant was taken to the hospital.
West Virginia State Route 892 in the Lubeck community of Wood County was slammed around four this afternoon.
Traffic lights in the area are not working.
High winds flipped over mobile homes, blew a brick house apart and uprooted trees in the Lubeck Community and
Blennerhassett Heights Road sections. Local residents called the winds "tornado like."
The Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has established a shelter at the Lubeck Volunteer Fire
Department for victims.
