There will be a sing Saturday, July 12, starting at 7 P. M. at the Creston Community Building. All singers, musicians and the public are welcome.

The Creston Community Association held its regular meeting on July 1 at the Community Building. A report was given on the ATV Poker run which is scheduled for July 26. All ATV enthusiasts should mark their calendars for a trip through country that few have ever seen.

An open house for the Community Building is also scheduled for August 10 with more details provided later.

Wanda Grim Juart of Home, Pennsylvania, Harold Grim and friend Leona of Albion, Penna. and Carmen Grim Queen of Parkersburg were all touring the Creston Community Building recently. All except Leona attended school there and were impressed by the work that had been done.

Jack Nutter, Fred Bish and some others have been working on the shelter over the picnic table. Betty Bish got too hot and became ill.

Commander Steve Mowrey's "ship" broke down at the mouth of Ghost Hollow the other evening and he had to call for assistance. A fellow of his rank who broke down ought to be in line to being promoted to the rank of Commodore.

Charles & Euell Russell and a number of other local residents journeyed to Spencer to watch the fireworks while others attended the fireworks at Burning Springs. On Saturday the Russell brothers attended the parade and ice cream social held by the fire department in Elizabeth.

Over the Decoration Day weekend the DNR took video of the "goings on" over at the mouth of Rock Run and around the Devil's Tea Table. Then the Heartwood Fund, the agent for the new owners of the former Westvaco properties ran ads in the newspapers stating that there would be no ATVs on their lands. So this weekend the authorities, at the request of the new owners, put the mudders, campers, vendors and others off the land over, on and around Rock Run. After the Decoration Day weekend there were "tons" of trash, car parts, etc. left behind. As one fellow said, "A few ruined it for us all." It will also be interesting to see if the state will be so helpful to private landowners who have trouble with trespassers.

While there have been lots of ATV accidents in the Rock Run area there had not been any fatalities even though several had been in "altered states". However, one cannot say that anymore as a 23 year old woman was killed Saturday when her ATV flipped over on top of her. Details are not locally known.

Keith Collins' chariot Chelsea became very ill on the move from Petersburg, W. Va. to Middletown, Virginia. Ace Mechanic Kathy Collins, with the help of her sister, Kelly Alastanos fixed Chelsea by installing a new alternator. Kelly was also the one with the great decorating tips. Those helping on the big move were Jane, Anna, Nancy and Alvin Engelke, Kathy & Kelly, and Wilbur Schenerlein, III. Apparently Keith Collins had little faith in the mechanics as he traded in Chelsea for a 2003 Honda Civic.

This summer Keith is working at Romney, WV at the West Virginia School for the deaf and blind. He is working with an autistic child and states he is leaning much about special needs children, which he feels will help him immensely in his classroom teaching.

The travelers visited the Rt. 11 potato chip factory & watched chips being made which turned out to be the best one fellow who lives to eat ever consumed. They can be purchased on line at www.rt11.com. It was noted that gasoline was 15 cents cheaper/gallon and automobile insurance in the Old Dominion is 42% less than in West Virginia. No doubt the high rates here are complements of the fine folks down at the Mouth of the Elk River who keep busy taking care of their friends and letting the state "go down the tubes".

On the way back home the local folks came through Sweet Springs, W. Va. which is the location of the Andrew S. Rowan home. It had been run by the state for old folks who had no place to go but now it is abandoned and the majestic buildings are in ruins.

Anna Engelke attended the 4th of July fireworks at Middletown, Va and was hit by flying debris. No harm done. She stated that the Spencer, W. Va. fireworks are still the best.

It was reported that the Triana group, which consisted of the former Columbia Natural Resources employees, along with financial backing from elsewhere, purchased Columbia Natural Resources from NISOURCE, an Indiana based utility and gas transportation giant. CNR paid royalty for March gas based on a price of $3.25/mcf when the actual price was often in excess of $12/mcf.

Mr. & Mrs. Carl Ferrell were calling on his rich aunt Jeanette in Grantsville.

It was learned that Martin Twist completed a shale well near the head of Poca and moved to the Payne Ridge.

S & R Gas Ventures fracted their new shale well near White Pine over the week end. White Pine has been a hot area lately.

Area residents have been contacted by con artists operating out of Africa [this is something one reads about happening elsewhere]. The letter, which came as SPAM on a fax machine wanted the sucker to meet these folks in Amsterdam to help transfer money from Zimbabwe which formerly was called Southern Rhodesia. Usually these scams, which involve the use of the touch's bank accounts, are based in Nigeria.

A billboard in Vienna, complete with a quote about freedom from Ronald Reagan, honors Wirt County's heroine, Jessica Lynch. Several of her relatives formerly lived in Vienna.

Nancy Engelke, who is an avid reader of Rita Mae Brown's cat mystery books, visited Sneaky Pie Brown's home town, Crozet Virginia to find out where these famous felines hung out but no one there seemed to even be aware that they had such famous kitties. Rita Mae Brown also wrote a book about Dolly Madison in the War of 1812. Crozet did have a fine peach orchard along with some fine wineries. The scenery was fabulous on Sky Line Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
