BOARD VOTES TO RETURN MINNORA CENTER TO COUNTY - Critical Financial Problems, EMS Sub-Station Moving

The Minnora Community Center is facing critical financial problems, most recently with the doubling of liability insurance to $600 a month, according to board president Donna Jordan.

"We are in a real struggle to keep the center open," said Jordan.

The center's eight member board unanimously voted this week to turn the real estate back to the Calhoun Commission, ending a long term lease.

The Commission will decide June 30th at 4 p.m., whether to accept the property. The commission could place the property under their blanket liability insurance, providing the center with some relief.

The West Virginia State Board of Risk advised 30 West Virginia counties this week their state liability insurance will go up 63%. Currently, Calhoun County does not use the Board of Risk insurance, but all insurance coverage is going up.

If such an agreement is reached, the commission's action would allow the current Minnora board and management to keep the center open.

Meanwhile, Calhoun's EMS sub-station at Minnora is being relocated. Randy Burgess, EMS Director, said the station will be located near Giar's Grocery along State Route 16.

The sub-station has been at the Minnora Community Center for a few years, established to bring better service to southern Calhoun.

Burgess said the Center recently raised the rent from $200 to $350. "There have been a number of problems with the physical facility regarding basic accommodations," he said.

Minnora Center board president Donna Jordan said rents are being raised to try and cover actual overhead. She said "EMS has not advised us they are leaving." The move is underway this week to a mobile home a short distance north of the current location, which Burgess said will provide better quarters. He said the mobile home and parking area is being rented.
