A financial crisis is looming at the Minnora Community Center, after the center was
making considerable progress, according to officer Donna Jordan.
Jordan said the center's June 18th liability insurance bill doubled to nearly $600 per
month, and it is unlikely the center can continue operating under such financial
duress. "It was a rude awakening," she said.
Insurance premiums are rapidly rising in West Virginia in many areas, and are
affecting businesses, non-profit organizations, government entities and
individuals.
The increases will be affecting numerous other groups, organizations and
government in Calhoun.
MCC currently has a monthly income of $800 from its regular tenants, with additional
money for operation from fundraisers. Jordan said the monthly gas, electric and
disposal bills run about $1000.
Jordan said the center has been moving ahead in providing a multitude of services
and programs to the community.
"The board does not want to close the MCC, but we cannot operate with such a
large loss every month," she said. The board did take funds from their annual ramp
dinner and pay the insurance premium through September.
The center is looking for solutions between now and then, one of which would be to
raise the rental fees. "We don't want to lose our tenants," she said, "but we may
have no choice but to close down."
The center rents to the Calhoun County Committee on Aging, the Emergency Medical
Services branch, and some office space.
Jordan says anyone who has an interest in the center should attend the next board
meeting on July 8th beginning at 7 p.m.
The Minnora property was rented to the center on a long-term lease by the Calhoun
Commission.
