Former Calhoun County Commissioner Willis "Tom" Gainer, 63, of Grantsville has died
after an extended illness. Gainer was well-known to the Calhoun community, retiring
from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services and the U. S. Army
Reserve, 305th Military Police Company.
In the past year he has received special recognition for his dedicated service to the community through the Lion's Club and the
Calhoun County Public Library. He was recognized recently for his government service as a county commissioner.
He was a member of the Calhoun County Library Board, U.S. Army veteran, the Rush Run Baptist Church,
a trustee for the Sand Ridge Cemetery, a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge, The Lions Club, the Bear Fork
Hunting Club and the National Rifle Association. He was also a baseball official.
He was a graduate of Glenville State College and the Calhoun High School Class of
1958.
He was born in Calhoun County, son of the late Mary Gainer. He is survived by his
wife Emily Stump Gainer and a daughter, Mary Grace of Indiana, Pennsylvania; a grandson,
Noah Thomas and a sister, Jackie Robinson of Grantsville.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Simmons Gainer and three sisters, Glenna Burroughs, Ruby Brown and Emagene Hileman.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Stump Funeral Home in
Grantsville. Rev. Lewis Villers and Rev. John Vannoy will officiate. Interment will be
in the Sand Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. |
