It was a laughable event - the Ice Cream and Watermelon Contests at the Wood
Festival on Saturday.
It was serious competition as contestants developed their own system for gorging
down the food.
Sandy McCumbers won the ice cream contest, eating it by the handful. We lost
count after six bowls. Her sister, Terry Jones, won the watermelon contest "right
down to the rind." Both out-distanced several younger eaters, who seemed to be the
likely winners.
The winners got even more ice cream and watermelon as prizes. The ice cream was
supplied by "The Schwan's Man."
