The Calhoun Commission completed a series of public hearings last night for the
development of the Russett-Sand Ridge-Route 16 water extension for the Mt. Zion
Public Service District.
The Commission filed an application for a Small Cities Block Grant through the
Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council for $1,500,000. The money would match $2,400,000
allocated for the project.
The water line extension would cover the Millstone, Sassafras Ridge and Russett
area, and would also extend south on Route 16 to an area near the Clay County
line.
The Commission has asked or is supporting federal funding for several projects in the
county, including:
The Grantsville Vol. Fire Department to assist in purchasing a new fire
truck through Homeland Security:
$140,000
Improvements to Calhoun courthouse, security and access through Homeland
Security:
$100,000
Town of Grantsville water system upgrade (supported by Commission) through rural
development, FDA:
$700,000
Mt. Zion Public Service District, matching to complete Sand Ridge/Rt. 16 water
projects for matching funds through HUD, independent agencies and Appropriations
Subcommittee:
$1,500,000
These applications have been supported by Congresswoman Shelly Moore
Capito.
Delegate Bill Stemple advised the Commission he is obtaining $15,000 for
generators for emergency services in Calhoun.
The Commission extended time frames on other grants obtained for the county, and
will seek to obtain a $30,000 Governor's Partnership grant to replace the roof on the
old B. F. Goodrich building.
The Commission approved a contract offered by Argil Jones to replace the roof on
the Calhoun County Park barn for less than $10,000.
A high bid of $1,200 was accepted for a used tractor.
The Commission postponed the payment of bills until next Monday, allowing time to
review the county budget and cash flow. The special meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m.
to pay bills.
The county continues to keep the regional jail bill paid.
Meeting dates have been changed for the next two months because of conflicts:
July 14 at 4 p.m. and August 11 at 4 p.m.
