A year has past since the first cases of West Nile virus were reported in West Virginia.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department had asked residents to submit dead birds for testing this year.
The MOVHD visited Calhoun a few weeks ago, encouraging residents to participate in the surveillance project by reporting
dead birds to the local department in Grantsville.
One bird has been submitted from Calhoun, according to Steve Bayer, director of environmental health and threat
preparedness for the department. He said eight birds have recently been submitted, six from Wood County, and one each
from Calhoun and Roane counties.
The birds are being sent this morning to the College of Veterinary Science at the University of Georgia, with results available
in about three weeks.
