THE LOCUSTS ARE RETURNING, MAYBE - Sections Of State Reporting The Insects

(05/25/2003)
Most cicadas appear once every 17 years, but thousands are showing up in southern West Virginia, causing problems with plants and trees.

They are known by most as locusts, and when they have arrived in this region, they've caused considerable damage.

They are known for their loud noises, which in "locust years" becomes an ear-shattering humming. They emerge from the ground and wriggle out of their shells. They mate, lay eggs, then die, all within weeks.

The young insects burrow into the soil after hatching, and the cycle continues.
