WOOD FESTIVAL BRINGS HOMETOWN ENTERTAINMENT - Committee Welcomes Former Calhouners

The Calhoun County Wood Festival will come to Grantsville June 5-7, with an array of hometown entertainment and activities.

The big Wood Festival Parade will be a highlight on Saturday, June 7 starting at 1 p.m.

Meetings

Calhoun County Wood Festival Committee Meetings will be held every Tuesday evening in May at 6 p.m. at the Koffee Kup Restaurant, Main Street, Grantsville. The public is invited to attend.

Quilt Raffle

JoAnn Shock has donated a quilt to be raffled off after the quilt show on Saturday, June 7. It was pieced by Shock and machine quilted by Sharon Jarvis.

Chances are 1 for $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. Anyone wanting to purchase a ticket may contact anyone on the Wood Festival Committee listed below.

Pretty Baby Contest

The Wood Festival Committee will have a Pretty Baby Contest on Saturday, May 31, at Calhoun Middle/High School Auditorium. Registration begins at 2pm and contest begins at 3pm. There will be a $5.00 entry fee.

Children age births to three-years-old are eligible to participate. Boys and girls are separated into the following age divisions: 0-6 months; 7-11 months; 1 year; two year; three year.

Queen Flora Pageant

The Wood Festival's Queen Flora Pageant will be held on Saturday, May 31, 7pm at the Calhoun Middle/High School auditorium.

Quilt Show

The Calhoun County Wood Festival is planning its 3rd Annual Quilt Show on Saturday, June 7th, 10am to 3pm, with quilted projects on display at the Grantsville Senior Citizen Center's main activity room. Marge and Chrissy Webster will host the show.

It is open to all Calhoun County residents and includes any project from large quilts to wall hangings, pillows, and everything in-between.

The project can be hand or machine quilted or appliquéd, kits, pre-printed panels, or your own original design. This will be a show only; no judging or selling will take place.

Exhibitors need to bring their projects to the center on Friday, June 6, between 8am and 4pm to register. This will allow time to properly display all projects for the Saturday show.

Exhibitors will be responsible for picking up their projects on Saturday between 3:30pm and 4pm.

Volleyball Tournament

Wood Festival Volleyball Tournament will be held Saturday, June 7, 10am on Wayne Underwood Field. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams, along with individual trophies for the first place team.

Teams can have up to eight players with two females on the field at all times. Fee is $50.

Recipe Contest

The Wood Festival will be having a Recipe Contest on Saturday, June 7.

Categories include bread, cakes, appetizers and snacks, candy, cookies, pastries, and canned foods. Food will be judged according to appearance and taste. A copy of the recipe should accompany each dish.

Recipe and dishes should be submitted by 11am at the small courtroom in the Courthouse. Judging will take place at 11:30am and the winners will be announced prior to the parade.

Watermelon/Ice Cream Eating Contest

The Wood Festival is looking for people willing to participate in watermelon and ice cream eating contests. They will take place on Saturday, June 7, on Main Street in front of Courthouse. Anyone interested in participating should contact Beth Carpenter, 354-7856.

Parade

Anyone interested in the Wood Festival Parade on Saturday, June 7, 1 pm, should contact Jim McCormick, 354-6823.

Wood Chopping

Several wood chopping activities will be held Saturday, June 7, 2pm, at Wayne Underwood Field. Arden Cogar, national wood chopping champion, will be present.

Activities will include cross cut, jack-and-jill (one male and one female), overhand chop, hawk and ax throws, and hot saw.

3rd Annual Car Show

The Third Annual Wood Festival Auto Show is planned for Saturday, June 7, 2003 from 9 to 5 p.m. next to Wayne Underwood Field.

The show has been building every year, and is drawing a lot of classy cars from the area. Lots of folks have been attending the event. Registration is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Entry fee is $8 for cars and trucks.

Awards and certificates will be presented at 3 p.m. Dash plaques for the first 50 vehicles. Show sponsors are Gary's Auto Repair, Smith's Auto and Rick's Pro Hardware.

No alcohol, not responsible for accidents. All vehicles should have a fire extinguisher and be driven onto the show Grounds.
