Senior Choir sings "Battle Hymn of the Republic"

Prayers were offered yesterday in front of the Calhoun courthouse for America's leaders - the country, state, counties and cities, and for "our children and their teachers, our Peace Officers, those serving the Military and the Veterans who have sacrificed to serve our nation."

It was the 52nd annual National Day of Prayer. The Minnie Hamilton Volunteer Chaplains Association sponsored the event, which included several pastors and music provided by the Senior Center choir.

Praying for our nation

The National Day of Prayer was observed by hundreds of thousands of Americans across the nation, reaching across denominational differences in a spirit of unity and power.

The National Day of Prayer tradition dates back to February 19, 1795, when President George Washington issued a proclamation setting aside a day of public thanksgiving. An annual day of prayer was established by Congress in 1952 and specifically designated in 1988 as the first Thursday in May.
