WOOD COUNTY FLUNKS SMOG STANDARDS - Four Other WV Counties Get "F"

Wood County gets an "F" for bad air.

The American Lung Association says one in four West Virginians breathes air that flunks federal standards for smog pollution.

Wood County and four other West Virginia counties, Cabell, Hancock, Kanawha and Ohio, received an F in this year's nationwide "State of the Air" report.

All five also got a failing grade in last year's survey.

Ozone is a culprit in smog, and ozone levels increase during the hot summer months. Power plants and other man-made forces contribute to the problem.

Poor air quality worsens ailments such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The American Lung Association has called on state and federal regulators as well as industry officials to curb the release of toxic chemicals.
