NEW "CLEAN" POWER PLANT PROPOSED FOR STATE - Construction Is $215 Million

(04/30/2003)
A new power plant is proposed for West Virginia.

Organizers of a proposed clean coal power plant say the project could bring about 1,100 jobs and $4 million dollars each year to south-central West Virginia.

The Western Greenbrier Co-Generation plan is a joint project among the communities of Rainelle, Rupert and Quinwood and developers from Colorado, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

The $215 million dollar power plant and manufacturing business would employ about 100 people. Another thousand additional jobs would be available at a nearby business park, according to the company.

The proposed business park would develop wood kilns, fish farms and greenhouses and would use steam and hot water from the power plant.

The developers have already received a $107 million dollar grant from the US Department of Energy in January. The grant must be matched locally by a revenue bond sale.

If the financial package is completed, construction is expected to begin in 2005.
