NATIONAL GUARDSMEN WILL HELP RE-BUILD IRAQ - Other Guard And Reserve Units Could Be Coming Home

(04/29/2003)
The fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom is slowing down, and there is talk of some troops coming home. There is no official word on West Virginia's 3,173 deployed reservists and National Guardsmen.

Units with the Army Reserves 99th Regional Support Command could be getting orders to come home throughout May, said Maj. Greg Yesko with the 99th Regional Support Command. About 1,200 have been sent from West Virginia.

Several Army Reserve units could serve reconstruction needs, such as the 180 deployed soldiers with the 304th Military Police Company of Bluefield or the 173 deployed soldiers with the 459th Engineer Company of Bridgeport.

National Guard units will help restore Iraq, like Parkersburg's 1092nd Engineering Battalion, which includes the Spencer Detachment. They have 522 deployed soldiers, the 111th Engineering Group out of St. Albans with 88 deployed soldiers and 122 deployed soldiers with the 157th Military Police Company from Martinsburg.

. The 726 deployed airmen with the state's 130th and 167th National Guard airlift wings could help in cargo and logistics transfer during a reshaping of Iraq.

The state could see more deployments before it's all over, according to military officials.
