Students who want to participate in athletics at Glenville State College are going to have to pay to play.
Glenville State's Board of Governors have ruled that students will be charged $100 a semester to play any of the school's
varsity sports. The mandatory athletic fee that is charged to every student on campus is also being increased.
Glenville State President Thomas Powell says they have decided not to cut athletic programs but to increase funding. He says
the pay-to-play fee will be in effect for at least one year.
President Powell said the college is "blazing new ground" and sending a message to athletes, "that if they are going to
participate in a Division II program, they are going to have to help support that program."
The fee will be credited against the student's scholarship money or their loans. He says most of the students are on some sort
of scholarship support.
Powell says Glenville State already charges extra fees for those students in sciences, land resources and teacher education
programs. He says athletes will now have to pay. Powell says it's a better alternative than cutting sports programs.
WVU has cut five varsity sports programs.
State schools are under the hammer of at least a 10% cut since the state is facing a $250 million shortfall.
