The Higher Education Policy Commission has given West Virginia University the go-ahead with $11 million dollars in
improvements to Mountaineer Field, home of the Mountaineer football team.
The approval comes just a week after WVU announced plans to drop five varsity sports to cut $600,000 from the athletic
department's annual budget.
The school was also granted permission today to raise tuition by up to 9.5 percent.
University President David Hardesty says just because the school is raising tuition and reducing some sports programs,
doesn't mean it's going to stop investing in the future. He says the renovation project is a revenue-generating measure that will
allow the athletic program to remain self-sustaining.
The commission today also approved a severance package for WVU's classified staff that will allow the university to save
money.
